| A Personal Account of Internet Access in Canada
"I have recently returned from Calgary in Canada where I lived for some time. Shaw Wave is the cable modem product there and it costs $40 CAD per month. I used it for a few years and it was a good service most of the time. I often saw downloads of 150 KB/s and a few times even as high as 300 KB/s. That's Bytes!!!! This was higher than their quoted service offered. Technically they had a download limit of 7 GB per month and an upload limit of 1 GB but I was only ever called by them once to ask me not to upload so much as I uploaded over 5 GB the previous month. I easily complied by turning off sharing in Napster.
They have in the past six months introduced Wave Lite which offers a lower speed that is capped for $25/month. This is a very cheap and great service for people who don't do much on the net but want always on access.
Install time for Shaw Wave is about 3 days on average. ADSL from Telus is either $40 per month if they install it or $35 per month if you buy the modem (around $100) and install it yourself. It takes about 3 days if you install it yourself or about two weeks for them to do it. No upload or download limits that I am aware of.
Dialup varies. Local calls are free so the cost is to sign up for a provider. Cheapest is around $15 per month and most expensive I have seen is about $25 per month.
I hope this helps. Use a factor of 1.5 to 1 to convert to EUR. $30 CAD equal approx. EUR 20.
Although my account is Alberta only, it is representative of Canada in general.
Neil."
